The Carajás Mine is the largest iron ore mine in the world. It is located in the municipality of Parauapebas, state of Pará in the Carajás Mountains of Northern Brazil. The mine is operated as an openpit mine, and is estimated to contain roughly billion tons of iron ore, plus gold, manganese, bauxite, copper, and nickel.

Brazil has some of the largest iron ore deposits in the world, which have been heavily mined since the 1950s. Tailings dams are built to contain the waste generated by iron mining and they have been an increasingly visible feature of Brazil’s mines since the 1970s.

Therefore, Brazil is home to the largest ironore mine and the world’s third largest bauxite mine, both located in the Amazonian state of Para. In order to accommodate the needs of the mines, Brazil deforests the Rainforest to make room for roads. Less tress indicates less biodiversity in the rainforest and contributes to climate change.

Excluding Vale (NYSE:VALE), close to 8 million tonnes of seaborne iron ore supply from Brazil is at risk in 2019, a report by Wood Mackenzie states.
